A note from Planetary Coven: Although the craft of songwriting will be referenced, you are invited to explore the following through any form of artistry you enjoy.

Inspire Music Magic

If you’re a songwriter looking for untapped wells of inspiration, why not try using tarot cards? We are familiar with using tarot cards to provide guidance and insight to our lives, but they are also mystic keys to unfurling the wonders of creativity.

The art of interpreting tarot is beautifully varied, and we can invite a similar approach when using tarot in creativity. It may take some time to figure out the path that works for you, and that path may look a little different than your fellow traveler’s. Let’s explore some ways to use tarot in songwriting for your next music magic session.

How to read tarot with a musical lens

You are invited to take a similar approach to creative tarot as you would a traditional reading. To get started, select a tarot card at random. You’ll use this card as the starting point for your song.

As you explore the chosen card, take in the imagery. Soften your focus, and allow your observer self to take the lead. Consider reflecting on questions such as:

  • What emotions, themes, or ideas does that card imagery evoke?

  • What previous knowledge about that card surfaces?

  • What could be clarified with further research?

You might find that the card inspires lyrics, melodies, or even the overall structure of your song. After all, just as songs are stories told through music, tarot cards are stories told through symbolism.
